An integrated, multi-component training program designed to provide in-school and out - of-school youth ages 16-18 years with opportunities for exposure to and exploration of career and employment opportunities in traditional and non-traditional apprenticeable occupations.
The program also develops essential foundation skills and competencies for unsubsidized employment, facilitate the attainment of the General Educational Development (GED) certificate for out-of-school youth, improve attitudes and expand career options through education, employment and training activities and academic enrichment for in-school youth. All programmatic activities are conducted in a functional context and work based learning environment.
Ten (10) out-of-school youth and (5) five in-school youth are recruited for the program which begins with the summer youth employment program.
The Jobs for Youth program is designed to provide the following elements to students:
1. Tutoring, study skills training, and instruction leading to secondary school completion, including school dropout prevention strategies;
2. Alternative secondary school offerings;
3. Summer employment opportunities directly linked to academic and occupational learning;
4. Paid and unpaid work experiences, including internships and job shadowing;
5. Occupational skills training;
6. Leadership development opportunities, which include community service and peer-centered activities encouraging responsibility and other positive social behaviors;
7. Supportive services;
8. Adult mentoring for a duration of at least twelve (12) months, that may occur both during and after program participation;
9. Follow-up services; and
10. Comprehensive guidance and counseling, including drug and alcohol abuse counseling, as well as referrals to counseling, as appropriate to the needs of the individual youth.
The program uses a functional context education approach to fully integrate technical concepts and to contextualize the academic course work with respect to SCANS skills. The program also utilizes the Work Readiness Workshop model to assist students to achieve Career Development and Employment goals.
Educational/Work Based Learning/Work Experience Activities
The Work Based Learning (WBL) experience offers youth an opportunity to acquire skills and/or increase work place habits preparing participants to enter the paid work experience activity. Training activities will also include focus on pre-employment and life skills training, work maturity, basic skills remediation, individual tutoring, and occupational skills training .
Case management counseling is provided to all students enrolled in the program.
The program offers occupational skills training in Computer Information Technology.
Participants will demonstrate increased positive personal and group identity and appreciation for the cultures of other ethnic groups as a result of their participation in workshops promoting mutliculturalism; attending college/community sponsored plays, musicals and dance performances, as well as participating in trips to museums and viewing films that address cultural issues.
Students will participate in conflict resolution training designed to empower youth to build mutually beneficial relationships among peers and adults and to resolve conflict effectively. Students will be introduced to a model which explores eight (8) essential steps to conflict resolution.
