WID encourages faculty to think about written assignments in at least two forms: informal, low-stakes writing that allows students to begin or explore their learning on a subject and formal, high-stakes writing that allows students to demonstrate what they've learned.

Low-stakes writing activities develop students' understanding of course content and facilitate their ability to communicate what they know.

High-stakes assignments should demonstrate knowledge and reflect the overall goals for the course.
