| INTRODUCTION |
LaGuardia students have transferred to over 50 private and public
colleges and universities, including CUNY and SUNY senior colleges.
These graduates have transferred because they understand that
in today’s competitive global market people constantly need
to enhance their skills and knowledge in order to advance in their
careers. Although graduates do very well with the Associate degree,
even more opportunities are available to those who obtain a Bachelor
or more advanced degree. Many LaGuardia graduates have gone on
to graduate schools and now have careers in fields such as medicine,
law, counseling, business and social work.
|
| Should
I Obtain My Degree at LaGuardia Before Transferring? |
|
There are definite advantages to completing your education at LaGuardia:
- You will obtain an Associate degree, which can be helpful in
securing employment.
- You will be able to transfer more, if not all, of your credits
to a senior college (and, with an AA or AS degree, you satisfy
all the general education requirements at CUNY senior colleges).
In addition, LaGuardia is negotiating transfer articulation agreements
with many private colleges to allow you to transfer all your credits
when you transfer with the Associate degree.
- The enchanced semester allows students to accumulate credits
rapidly (and-in most cases- more inexpensively)
- LaGuardia classes are smaller with more personalized attention
than you will find at most senior colleges.
- The Co-op Internship experience helps you make career choices,
make contacts in your field, and gain valuable work experience.
- These advantages give students the building blocks needed to
succeed, whether they seek employment or transfer.
- Often students use their time at LaGuardia to build up solid
credentials (a good grade point average (GPA), excellent letters
of recommendation) and/or to take advantage to study abroad or
other academic programs that will broaden their range of experiences
and help them to gain admission to competitive programs.

| Should
I Transfer to a Private or a Public Senior College? |
SUNY and CUNY are public universities. Most LaGuardia Students transfer
to CUNY senior colleges because of their quality, affordability and
convenience to home and work. In addition there are SUNY colleges that
are affordable and relatively close to New York City. But don’t
limit yourself. Although private colleges have a higher tuition than
CUNY and SUNY, many of them offer community college students generous
scholarships and financial aid.
|
| What Steps
Do I Take to Transfer? |
- Start planning early. Take initiative to create a relationship with
your advisor or counselor. Decide upon your major and career interests
early. Then it will be easier to choose courses that are more likely
to transfer to the senior college of your choice.
- Visit the Transfer Services as soon as possible. At CTC you can talk
to trained staff, look at the senior colleges catalogs, visit websites,
and use
computer programs (such as DISCOVER and EXPAN) that help you explore
your interests, decide on a major, search for colleges to transfer to,
look up scholar Ship and financial aid information, and learn about
various careers.
- As soon as possible, write or telephone colleges that
interest you. Many colleges have web sites that can be
helpful in acquiring information.
|
| Does LaGuardia
Offer Any Special Transfer Opportunities? |
Yes, LaGuardia has joined fellow universities to better assist students
interested in transferring to private senior colleges. For instance
the Barnard-LaGuardia Intercollegiate Partnership Program gives students
interested in science careers to spend five weeks in an all-expense
paid summer science program on the campus of Barnard College. The program
prepares students for science study at senior colleges like Barnard
and offers participants a tuition-free science course at Barnard following
their summer program. For application and information, see LaGuardia’s
Honors Program web site at www.laguardia.edu/honors
and click on Enriched Off-Campus Summer Programs. At this site,
you will also see information and application for the Vassar Exploring
Transfer Program, another valuable all-expense paid summer program.
Similarly, the Bilingual Hispanic Engineering Program, is a program
for Hispanic students interested in pursuing a career in engineering.
The program allows LaGuardia Community College students to continue
their education at either Turabo University or Universidad Politecnica
de Puerto Rico and earn a degree in engineering. For more information
stop in C239 or call 482-5266.
Furthermore, students interested in gaining research experience can
do so through The Bridges to the Future Program, where students are
given the opportunity to work individually with faculty mentors. Students
attend special science research seminars and receive counseling in preparing
for science careers and college transfer. For application information
contact Professor Clara Wu in the Natural & Applied Sciences Department
or call 482-5763.
