Career Counseling
Students can get career counseling from
various areas of the college:
*When working with the
Counseling Department, you’re
encouraged to explore your career
interests, choose a major, and learn
about the major and its relationship to
their career goals. Located in C245,
counselors administer career assessment
inventories and work with students to
utilize the results as a tool in
decision making. Additionally, they work
with students in preparing for the
transfer process to a four-year college.
*Your internship advisor will discuss
your career plans, and work with you on
exploring the areas you’re interested
in, throughout your time at LaGuardia.
*Your professors may also be good
resources for career counseling.
Educational planning
Students can obtain educational planning
assistance for their post-LaGuardia
education from two college departments.
*Transfer Services has a comprehensive
resource center and experienced
specialists who can help you research
your best transfer options and
opportunities. Several of the staff
members are recent LaGuardia alums who
have transferred to 4-year colleges
themselves.
* The Counseling Department offers
students an opportunity to work with a
counselor in developing a personal
educational plan that integrates their
academic, career and personal goals. As
part of this process, students are
encouraged to begin thinking about
transfer and are assisted in preparing
for the transfer process.

Personal Counseling
Students who are experiencing personal
problems which are affecting their
academic success can meet with a
counselor to assist them in developing
the skills needed to meet the challenges
they are facing. The counseling
relationship is completely confidential
and private.
Some of the personal issues for which
students seek counseling are: family
issues/conflicts, drug and alcohol
related problems, sexual concerns,
self-confidence, anxiety, depression,
interpersonal difficulties, developing a
sense of identity, and loss and
bereavement. Individual personal
counseling is offered on a short-term
basis in C245. students requiring more
extensive counseling services are
provided with referrals to outside
agencies. Student Outreach and
Advocacy
Counselors provide outreach services
through the offering of theme based
workshops such as: Probation Workshops;
Transfer Workshops; Time Management
Workshops; Coping Skills Workshops
(e.g., Parent Support Group); Alcohol
Awareness; Depression Screenings;
Anxiety Screenings; and, various types
of support groups. Counselors are also
available to work with students on
issues such as study skills, managing
test anxiety, and test taking.
Ombuds Officer
Located in C322, the Ombuds Officer
helps students with problems that
seemingly can’t be handled by the usual
processes and procedures. Depending on
the nature of the problem, she offers
advice, guidance, interpretation and
investigation to students who come for
help.
