Communication and the Non-Native Speaker, HUL 100

This course is designes to help students develop facility with English when it is not his or her native language. It is especially designed to provide students with insight into interpersonal relations in various cultural settings. Course content will include Communication theory, interpersonal skills in both verbal and non-verbal communication, and reinforcement of oral language skills. Students will survey the sound system for Standard English, learn to listening skills and self-corrections for pronunciation, grammar and logic.

Oral Communication, HUC 101

This course is designed to introduce the student to communication theory and practice, with an emphasis on the production of formal messages. Topics such as non-verbal communication, listening, group dynamics, cultural diversity in communication, and rhetorical structures and styles are introduced, practiced and assessed through in-class performance.

Voice and Diction, HUC 104

This course is designed for students who wish to improve their speaking skills. Course content will include the basic theory of the production od speech and voice, study of the speech and hearing mechanism and a survey of the sound system of regional Standard English. Students will recieve an analysis of their speaking skills and use drills yo modify their voice and diction patterns.

Public Speaking, HUC 106

This Course is a coninuation of Oral Communication (HUC 101) and designed to provide the students with critical understanding and enhanced performance in style od formal public speaking. Classic rhetorical styles in legislative, ceremonial, and persuasive speeches will be analyzed, developed, practice and assessed.

Communication in a Professional Setting, HUC 108

This course will develop students' knowledge of oral communication principlesand theories in professional settings. Topics will include types of organizational communication, obstacles to effective leadership behavior, and non-verbal communication. Students will learn about assertive behavior, conflict resolution, effective listening skills, and persuasive messages. Contemporary computer software such as Power Point, will be used to allow students to further professionalize presentations.

Argumentation and Debate, HUC 109

This course builds on the basic oral skills developed in Oral Communication (HUC 101) and is designed to provide the student with the rhetorical and analytical skills necessary for persuasive debate. The student will be introduced to different styles of debating, including the cross-examination debate. The student will also learn to prepare a debate brief and to use flow sheets to structure refutation and rebuttle. In addition, the role of argumentation and debate in a democratic society will be discussed.

Mass Media and their Evolution, HUC 120

This course historically traces the development of such mass media as radio, television, newspapers, recordings, film, and examines the functions and limitations of each medium. Special attention is given both to the role of mass communication in reflecting and projecting society, and to the form and functions of mass systems of the future.

Mass Communication and Society, HUC 130

This course critically analyzes selected issues in mass communication. Possible topics include: media violence and pornography; media stereotyping; comics and political cartoons; hidden persuaders; editorial policies; media bias; censorship; press freedom and responsibility. Students projects may vary each term.

Introduction to Intercultural Communication, HUN/SSN 180

This course introduces students to the dynamics of intercultural communication and enable them to communicate more effectively in multi-cultural settings. Through field trips, cultural research, and role-plays, students develop the skills needed to look objectively at other cultures. Using New York City as a laboratory, they gain experience identifying and analyzing dominant cultural patterns, thus improving their ability to understand the often perplexing behavior of people from cultures other than their own.
