Welcome

The Summer Intensive English Language
Program at LaGuardia Community College consists of six classes of
approximately twenty-one students each. Each group works with a Reading
& Writing Teacher, a Project Teacher, a Teaching Assistant, and a Student
Leader. Students attend a daily computer class in which they learn how
to use typing programs, research the internet, have online discussions,
type up essays, save documents to disks, use e-mail, and any other basic
computer skills that they can use through their lifetime.
Students read the following 3 books. "...If
You Lived at the Time of The American Revolution" by Kay Moore. "War
comes to Willy Freeman" by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher
Collier, and
"My Brother Sam is Dead" by James and Chris Collier. They keep a
daily journal about what they are learning or reading about. They also
prepare PowerPoint presentations on The Revolution in the United States
by working in groups.
In SIELP 2006, the students came from 27
different countries. There are students from Afghanistan, Argentina,
Bangladesh, Brazil, Burma, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic,
Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, India,
Jakarta, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan,
Peru, Thailand, Taiwan, USA and Venezuela.
Students work hard to meet the challenges of the summer. The daily
attendance rate is between 93% and 99%. The students take from 2-3 field
trips each summer. In 2006, students will visit
The Fraunces Tavern
Museum and The Old Bethpage
Restoration.
Students are encouraged to keep in contact with the friends they have
made at SIELP. After the summer program, there are Saturday classes
where students can continue improving their English Language skills.
