At LaGuardia Community College, your well-being is important to us. Personal wellness is a balance of your physical, emotional, social, academic, environmental and spiritual lives. All of these work together to help you achieve success as a student. The following resources will help you develop your personal wellness.
Emotional wellness is promoting self-care, a positive attitude, high self-esteem, and a strong self-image. This includes coping effectively with life and creating satisfying relationships.
Intellectual (Academic) Wellness is engaging in creative and stimulating mental activities. Using the resources available to expand ones knowledge, improving skills, and increase one’s potential.
Physical wellness is the ability to apply ones knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self-management, attitude, and skills toward achieving personal fitness and health goals. This includes recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods and sleep.
Financial wellness includes satisfaction with current and future financial situations, the ability to manage money, understand ones financial aid and the ability to sustain one’s self financially.
Occupational wellness is personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work. The occupationally well person fulfills a socially defined role that is both stimulating and inherently rewarding. S/he chooses a role (or several roles) that are consistent with beliefs, goals, lifestyle, personality and values.
Social wellness is the ability to develop a sense of connection, belonging, and a well-developed support system. The socially well person has a network of friends and family to whom s/he can turn to for support, validation and sharing of life experiences. These relationships are based on interdependence (rather than codependence), mutual trust and respect, equity of power and cultural competence.
Environmental Wellness is the ability to develop healthy relationships, the ability to interact with others effectively, the ability to adapt to various social situations, and life challenges in one’s educational, personal, and professional environment. This includes good health by occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support well-being.
Spiritual Wellness is developing a sense of purpose and meaning to life. This is accomplished by learning to experience healthy relationships that incorporate love, joy, and fulfillment.
