Positive Approaches to Problematic People
During our busy workdays we can expect to encounter people who may be stressed,
angry or otherwise difficult to handle. Occasionally, you may be confronted by
an angry person (in your face or on the phone) who starts to shout at you and
you are caught totally by surprise. Do you start shouting back at the person, or
do you know how to do to defuse this situation gracefully? This interactive
two-hour workshop is designed to provide practical strategies for coping with
problematic individuals, including strategies for dealing with angry or
aggressive people. Step-by step procedures will be covered for defusing a
potentially explosive situation. Topics covered include:
- How to spot trouble coming
- Understanding positive and negative nonverbal behavior
- Providing excellent service on bad days
- Managing conflict and stress
- Strategies to identify and protect yourself from potentially dangerous
people
- How to defuse an angry person
- How to view a complaint as a gift
- Strategies for dealing with problematic co-workers
Presenter: Marie L. Radford (Rutgers University)
Time: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
