In-Service Training is one of six
subcommittees of the Committee on Professional Development.
This subcommittee is responsible for developing
workshops for all staff.
Dear Faculty and Staff Member:
On behalf of the In-Service Training Subcommittee, we would like to invite
you to our program. Workshops listed in this page have been designed to help you
explore various training opportunities at the College. In addition, these
programs will provide you with the opportunity to meet and share ideas with
other members of the College community and college-wide Committee on
Professional Development.

INTRODUCTION TO POWERPOINT
PowerPoint is a presentation program that combines images, graphics, sound, text
and animation to create professional presentations. This program may be used to
do the following: a) outline a topic of discussion, b) create a visual
presentation of a topic, c) direct attention to key points, d) create
stimulating and interactive lecture slides as a teaching and learning tool, and
e) aid student learning and presentations as a communication tool. This
workshop will cover the basic steps for creating attractive and animated
presentations. Bring a formatted disk to save your presentation.

INTRODUCTION TO CREATING SPREADSHEETS
Spreadsheets are used to store numeric data, perform calculations and easily
search its database for specific criteria as well as create charts. It can be
used for business, to maintain personal accounts, and to electronically
calculate grades. This introductory workshop will cover the basic steps in
creating and formatting a spreadsheet, performing calculations, searching for
specific data and generating a chart.

HEALTHY COMPUTING
As the "Digital World" is so predominant in the academic environment of
LaGuardia Community College, it is extremely important that we work efficiently
and safely at our workstations. The presenters will engage participants in a
PowerPoint/interactive seminar where faculty will learn how to work safely at
their computers. Valuable tips will be offered in that area of Ergonomics,
posture, and injury prevention. During the presentation, exercises will be
demonstrated
and handouts will be made available.

TIPS AND TACTICS FOR TIME MANAGEMENT AND
ORGANIZATION SKILLS (Designed for Staff Members)
Feeling overwhelmed at work? Learn how to get more done with less stress by
efficiently managing your time. This interactive workshop
provides practical strategies for surviving information overload,
taking control of time, and getting organized. A winning attitude and
good work habits are keys to success. Dig out from under that pile of
papers and boost your confidence. You will learn the following:
7 habits of highly effective people, b) timesaving tips for telephone,
voicemail, e-mail, and filing, c) when and how to say "No!," d) how to
control clutter, and how to beat procrastination and perfectionism, e) to
develop to-do lists and prioritize tasks, based on Stephen Covey's work,
f) to differentiate between effectiveness and efficiency, g) to identify
advantages and disadvantages of delegation methods, and h) the 5 worst
mistakes people make with their time.

GROUPWISE 6.5 AND GROUPWISE WEB ACCESS: THE BASICS
E-mail has become a basic way of communicating in our daily and professional
lives. This is particularly true at LaGuardia. Information regarding college
policies, current events, meetings, collaborations and much more are
disseminated through e-mail. Currently, LaGuardia is using GroupWise 5.5, but
will change to 6.5 during Fall Session I. To prepare the college community for
the new version, this workshop will include the following: a) sending and
receiving mail, b) retracting and re-sending mail within the GroupWise system,
c) using the Address Books, d) confirming delivery of mail, e) junk mail
handling, f) appointments, reminder notes, phone messages and checklist, and g)
forwarding mail and more. (*Only 14 seats available for the each workshop)
