Welcome to PDA's
Continuing Education Programs

One of the main educational components offered by Program for Deaf Adults (PDA) is the Adult & Continuing Education Program (ACE). Through PDA/ACE, courses are designed for non-degree individuals who wish to enhance their academic, linguistic and/or life enrichment skills. The courses offered include: American Sign Language (ASL) for hearing and Deaf foreign students; Basic English Literacy; college preparation; computer skills and life-enhancement learning classes. PDA's Continuing Education Program also provides Individual Instruction to Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Hard-of-Hearing and late-deafened adults for all educational needs. In addition, we offer specialized workshops, such as specific aspects of American Sign Language, and contract instructional services on- or off-campus, especially in English Literacy for Deaf Adults.

The Mission of the Program for Deaf Adults (PDA) is to provide accessible educational opportunities and specialized support services at LaGuardia Community College for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In order to provide services, Program for Deaf Adults recognizes the need to develop and offer classes in American Sign Language (ASL) and ASL-English Interpretation.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

I first attended Program for the Deaf Adults' Continuing Education Program in 1992. I took G.E.D classes for 2 years and eventually graduated with a G.E.D diploma (Spanish version). I am currently enrolled in LaGuardia's Academic Degree Program where I am pursuing an AA in Deaf Studies. My goal is to become an ASL teacher after I graduate. LaGuardia and PDA have helped me to get good support services that enabled me to pass all of my classes."-
Maria Siskind, former student

"When I first attended LaGuardia Community College, I was enrolled in the Intensive Study in ASL Levels 2- 4 classes; these were the only credit classes I took through LaGCC. I had taken ASL classes in the past, but the classes offered by LaGuardia gave me something that other schools had not - a concrete foundation in ASL. That foundation gave me what I needed to get accepted into LaGuardia's Interpreting Education Project's two-year ASL/English Interpretation Certificate program and begin working towards my goal of becoming an American Sign Language Interpreter. I graduated from the program and am currently working as an interpreter." -Amanda Toukonen Boettcher,'03 IEP   testimonials
