The Program is responsive to the needs of the community and its students and was created to fulfill a need for occupational therapy services in aging, rehabilitation medicine, mental health and developmental conditions. The curriculum is designed to strengthen and improve occupational therapy services in health agencies and community settings by preparing students to work as a member of a team with the occupational therapist and other professionals. The program prepares graduates for eligibility for certification (by examination) by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and (by application) by the New York State Department of Education.

Students learn to differentiate between the professional and technical levels in occupational therapy. The program promotes pride in the role of the certified occupational therapy assistant while providing a foundation in the liberal arts.
