  1. Write a 5-page paper discussing some of the major features of welfare reform in this country. Give examples of individuals who have moved from welfare to work and discuss their “new independence”.
  2. Imagine yourself as an unskilled worker coming to Queens with a spouse and a child. You have a starting budget of $500. Give a detailed step-by-step analysis of how you would go about finding housing and feeding your family. What other expenses can you think of that come up when looking for a job?
  3. Research the wages and benefits packages of Wal-Mart and McDonald’s. Find out about salary scales, stock sharing options, and health benefits. Which company would you rather work for? If you have difficulty finding this information, discuss that too! What companies, if any, disclose this type of information?
