Philippines : I was born in the Philippines. . At the age of thirteen I and my family immigrated here in the U.S. Therefore, I still remember how people dispose their garbage in the Philippines. In the Province where I grew up people do not recycle plastics, papers, and metals. Also, since garbage is not being collected like here in the U.S, people take the stand to dispose their own garbage. They usually dig on the ground where garbage is placed to keep it away from animals and people for safety purposes.

In our house in New York City me and my brother are in charged of sorting out the papers, plastics, and metals every Monday. I am an expert on this job. We put out the garbage twice a week for Monday and Thursday's garbage collections. Everybody seems to recycle and handle their garbage very well in my neighborhood. Me and my brother make sure our garbage bags are tightly closed before we put them out for garbage collection. We wash our hands with antibacterial soap after we handled the garbage.                                                                                                                                                Bryan Asuncion

Puerto Rico : That was a good idea that you guys had, about seperating the garbage like that. New york :  hi i my name is kira davis, and i am from the u.s. i know compared to other people at laguardia that's pretty boring, but i can say that i have moved aroumd a lot. For right now, my home is located in the south bronx, and of course we try to avoid fines by following the rules and regulations for garbage diposal and recyclables. We put out our trash every monday, wednesday, and friday and the recycle items go out every wednesday. Of course there are times we forget, but like everyone else we can only do our best.

New York :  I can relate to what you were saying. In my neighborhood its the same way. People in my neighborhood do recylce and try to take out their garbage as often as they can, but sometimes people are just too busy.

Colombia   Some information about how Colombians handle garbage within the country.Colombia has a population of 42,310,775 people. I think one of the main problems is that our country does not have enough resources to do garbage recycle. The garbage is burned, buried and even though is not recycled, there are people who would collect the bottles and boxes to sell them to industries in order to get money. Also they tend to reused or repair items that in USA would be consider as trash like TVs, radios, etc.

Dominican Republic:  The Way the Dominican Republic Handle Garbage.  When I was living in my country, people used to handle garbage in different ways. For example the garbage truck passed just though the cities, but it would not stop in the town. Because of this situation, people there had to do something with the garbage. Some of them burned it, others just abandoned it. On the other hand, the garbage that was picked up in the cities was taken to a land and burned. They did not have another thing to do with it.People who were more educated package the garbage and took it to the city where the truck went through. Some others pay to someone every week to remove it. No everybody recycle there, they mix up all kind of garbage. They put bottle, plastic, leftover and other kinds of garbage together. From what I know, I think that the garbage was handled the way it was because we were not an economically stable country. There were not enough funds to invest for this kind of need.
Unlike over here, garbage is handled in a different way. It is recycled, even though, people do not do it. Sometimes, in my country do no even go when it has to.
This is a serious problem that is affecting the population. When the garbage is burned, the smoke spread all over contaminating the environment. The Dominican Republic is a small country, so there is not a special land place far away where the garbage can be burned without affecting people too much. However, that does not mean that there is not going to be any contamination in the environment.
Something that I have to make clear is that this situation was happening when I was in my country 5 years ago. I guess that the situation had changed over the years. Now, there is a different president. It might be different.

Nigeria : Garbage in my country is not really giving much concern about, compared to how it is treated in the US. In Nigeria, the government (dept. of health) handles the garbage. They move around in compactors at certain days and collects the garbages which is placed outside your building. There is no specific dates when they come collect the garbage so at times your garbage could be left open for days and then begin to stink which is harzadous. And also the sanitation workers embark on strikes, which is really dangerous because the streets is packed with garbage and cause series of health havocs. Individuals do not seperate their garbage...everything is put together. It is left for the sanitation workers to sort it out. People also move around in big carts taking out trash for people for certain amounts of money and then dumping it in the ocean, bushes or abandoned places.
Recycling of garbages in my country is kind of expensive...so it is either reused or repaired if broken. cans, bottles are collected by people to be sold later.
Nigeria operates a discarded technology waste system, most of the waste is dumped in the ocean, bottles are reused and cans are recycled for other uses.
Efforts are on the way to improve waste management, until then we keep our fi ngers crossed and hope for the better.

New York : My name is Evelyn Francis, I was born and raised in Jamaica Queens. For as long as i can remember the garbage in my community was always separated into recycling and regular garbage. Ever since the new law was past that we have to separate our garbage in three different categories, i have noticed that only a very few of us do what is expected of us. I am not going to lie, at first i did not separate my garbage but after i was told that you can be fined up to $100 for not doing so, i have been recycling and separating my garbage in the three appropriate categories.

New York : Regarding the fines here in New York City, my household had been fined for $25 for something we didn't do. I believed someone had slipped in a piece of wood or something in one of our garbage a year ago.

Dominican Republic : The time that i had been living in the Domonican Republic i remember that we always took out the garbage in the morning time because otherwise there would be garbage all over the streets in the night time because there would be people who would open up all the bags and look through them. There was also not alot of garbage to be taken out because people in my country tend to keep garbage as long as possible.

Italy :  My father worked for the NYC Sanitation, so he always recycled, even before it was the law. My mother, who was born in Italy, also had the same views and beliefs about saving the environment, by utilizing less trash and proper recycling. Nothing went to waste, especially the food .

New York:  St. Thomas USVI has a bad garbage system. Trash is left is big bends untill it is picked up at later date. the bend is open and filled with bugs and birds. It also smells. After the trash is collected then it is burn.

New York:  I can relate to you as well, in my neighborhood everyone usually tries to throw out their garbage when they are supposed to but at times they just can't get to it. In my neighborhood if sanitation workers find recycable items in regular garbage fines are given out.

Caribbean :  My name is Vanneth Joseph; I am from Grenada West Indies Island. It is located in the Caribbean. When I was growing up, I can vividly remember how garbage and waste were handled in my Country. Some examples I have encountered were: some of the things was discarded were old clothes, waste, cans, dead animals, wood, asbestos skin from fruits and spoiled vegetables, bottles etc. All these things were mixed up together but the poor people would go through the garbage to get the bottles etc to sell.
Some of the things that reused were rapping papers, cloth towel, the empty can, and they use it as a cup for water, tea, and the larger cans are used for baking pans and cooking utensil. People would save their plastic containers and bags to convey things the next time they have to go to the store. Paper cups and plates was also reuse. Papers was use to write things and the rest was save for another time. Even food scrap was save and throw out for the animals.
Garbage was stored in garbage pails, buckets, and containers. There were no differences among the population, because of the small Island everyone abide by the rules for disposal of garbage. The garbage collected, is disposed of by the people who handle their own garbage, however there is a small group of civil servants who do enforce rules for garbage disposal. The garbage was discarded by burning, burying, and dumping into deserted swamp and land field. The garbage had no special time to remove since it is a small Island and there is not much people the garbage potion is less, there is not much accumulated, it is removed whenever it is necessary.
We try our best to conserve things like electricity, we reuse things that can be used and we use nature whenever we can with available technology, for e.g. we dry clothes by hanging them outside to dry by the sunlight. I would say my country is a recipient of discarded technology.

Pakistan:  People in pakistan deal with the garbage same way as people in united states. The stuff which has to be recycled is recycled.People take out garbage every day. They are very much concerned about cleaning so they cover there garbage so the germs of the waste dont effect the environment.
