Education & Teaching

A career in teaching provides rewards, challenges and the opportunity to make a difference in the life of every student who enters your classroom.

New York City is looking for teachers who understand and reflect the diversity of its student population, including minorities and other traditionally under-represented groups.

LaGuardia’s unique environment, which stresses international education, makes it an ideal place to start a Bachelor’s degree in teaching and harness the incomparable energy of New York City.

LaGuardia offers 2 joint Associate/Bachelor’s degree programs in Education in conjunction with Queens College in Flushing, NY.

The Liberal Arts/Childhood Education AA/BS program prepares students for the New York State Initial Certificate in Childhood Education, Grades 1-6.

The Liberal Arts/Secondary Education AA/BA program is geared to students who want to become middle, junior high and senior high school teachers.

A third program, Education Associate: The Bilingual Child is currently closed to new students.

Careers

In the New York City public school system, new teachers earn a starting salary of $39,000; experienced teachers can earn upwards of $60,000*.

Depending on the school system, teachers can often augment their salary in a variety of ways, including working with students in extracurricular activities, earning a Master’s degree, or teaching summer school.
