Arts & Technology High Hosts Student WTC Photo Exhibit

By Staff

The Robert F. Wagner Jr. Institute for Arts and Technology High School is presenting a student photography exhibit on the World Trade Center tragedy and the firefighters who gallantly attempted to rescue the thousands who were at the site.

“Fallen Soldiers: A Dedication to the New York City Fire Department” is a collection of 20 powerful black and white photographs taken by two high school seniors, Shanna Nash and Michael Lindwasser.

The exhibit, which will be on view throughout the month of December, is on display at the high school at 47-07 30th Place. For more information, call 472-9124.

Armed with their cameras, the young photojournalists went to the site of Ground Zero where they captured the indescribable devastation, the heroic acts of the firefighters, and New Yorkers’ reactions to the horrific attack upon the city. Photographs also were taken at several local firehouses that sadly became memorials for the fallen firefighters.

“We felt that art was a good way to express how we felt,” Mr. Lindwasser said as he stood in the high school gallery that houses the images.

“It is our memorial to the firefighters,” said Ms. Nash. Along with the photographs, the gallery is adorned with a large memorial that the two students and fellow classmates constructed. The memorial, set in the center of the gallery space, contains panels plastered with news clippings on the September 11th attack and the events that transpired and a line of candles placed along its base.

In another gesture to the firefighters, Mr. Lindwasser and Ms. Nash will be selling all the 9x14 pieces on display and contributing the proceeds to the NYFD’s memorial fund.
