How do I open up and turn on the laptop?
To open the laptop, push the button located on the front panel. After the laptop is opened and all necessary connections made, the computer can be turned on by pushing the power button located in the middle above the keyboard.
 
  
 
 
What kind of software is available?
Laptops are equipped with: Microsoft Office XP, which includes Access, Excel, FrontPage, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word.  In addition, Mapple and SSPS statistical software are available.
 
 
Is there an Internet connection?
For internet access, double click on the Internet Explorer icon.
You can also access the Start menu, go to Programs, and then select
the web browser.







 
 
 

Please explain the function of the wireless network card.

The wireless network PC card allows high speed Internet access over the wireless network, providing portability, access to all network resources, plus the flexibility to work when and where you want in the Library, or in designated areas on campus.
 
 
How can I attach a mouse?
Attach a USB-compatible mouse to the USB connector. If you attach a USB mouse to the computer, you do not need to reboot in order to use the mouse.

 
Whom should I consult if I have computer problems or malfunctions?
If the laptop is not working properly, please bring it to the Media Desk in E-101 for technicians to evaluate.
 
 
How do I save files to a floppy disk?
1.  Make sure you have inserted a disk into the floppy disk drive.
     A COPY of your Word document will be saved to a floppy disk
     when you choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu:





 
 
 
2.  The "Save As..." window pops up. You will need to choose your floppy drive as the new location to save your file. Click on
     the little arrow next to the location bar to change the location:
 
 

 

3.  A list of locations will drop down: Choose the (A:) drive, which is the floppy drive by clicking on it.
 
 
 
4.  This menu will pop up, showing the (A:) drive selected as the new location where this file will be saved. A list of other files on the
     floppy disk will also be displayed.

 
 
5.  Now click on the "Save" button in the lower right hand corner of the "Save As" window, and the file will be COPIED to the
     floppy disk. You may notice a sound as the file is copied, and the light on your floppy drive light up or flash. Your file is now
     stored in two places, on the floppy disk, and on your computer in its original location

 
 
What are the proper procedures for shutting down the laptop?
Turning off the laptop without properly shutting down the system can cause problems -- files left open, can result in data loss and corrupt files. The proper shut down technique is to close all programs first, make sure CDs, DVDs and floppy disks have been removed, then select Shut Down option from Start Menu.

 
 
Am I able to burn CDs and DVDs?
You can burn CDs only. A standard CD-R or CD-RW is used to record and play data in the CD-ROM drive
 
1.  Double click easy CD creator icon on desktop or go to Start, Programs, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5, Applications and click
     Easy CD Creator.
 
2.  Use the drop down box to select the location of the files you need to burn to the CD.
 
3.  When you find the files you want to burn, select them and click the ADD button. This will add them to the CD project frame.
 
4.  After you add all your files, insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW into the CD drive and click the red record button, and this will
     start the burning process of your CD.
 
Note: Your project size CANNOT exceed 750 - 800 megabytes, depending on the CD you have.
 
5.  You will be able to tell if your CD project is full by the status bar down below.
 
6.  When you are finished recording, if asked whether you want to FINALIZE the project or not, say YES.
 
7.  Close the program and exit--it is not necessary to save the project. Eject the CD.
