Notes From The Government
Documents Desk: ERIC/Digital
Library Pilot Project
By Prof. Jane Devine

The LaGuardia Community College Library is participating in a National Library of Education pilot project to make ERIC Documents available in full text format via the Web. LaGuardia is one of approximately 300 Libraries nationwide selected to participate in this program.

The Project utilizes the OCLC First Search Online Service to make a selection of ERIC materials accessible in full text format. The ERIC documents themselves represent only federally funded ERIC reports from 1997 to the present, and constitutes about ten percent of all ERIC documents from that time frame. New records will be added on a monthly basis and the project, started in July will run through the end of the year.

The OCLC presentation is easy to use, offers advanced searching, and help screen support. Full text is offered in PDF format, and all items can be printed out. E-mailing items is also an option.

At the end of the year usage will be evaluated and decisions made about adopting this means of access on a permanent basis. Please feel free to explore the database and test its usefulness. Also please send any questions and comments to Jane Devine at the Library, or call her at ext. 5415, so that your thoughts can be shared with the project administrators.

Access at http://www.ref.oclc.org. Select "Use FirstSearch. Authorization code is: 100154-191. The password is "spume3put." Select "All Databases' highlighted at the left of the screen. Menu offers ERIC, the traditional bibliographic searching database and ERICResearch, the M text pilot project.
