Media Services

By Terry Parker, Senior CLT

Media Services recently purchased equipment known as a Worldwide VCR, which has the capacity to digitally convert videotapes from any broadcast standard (NTSC, PAL, SECAM) into any format.

Many faculty members return from overseas research or vacation only to discover that all their video footage needs to be converted. Others have shipped videotapes abroad, only to be informed by recipients that they are unable to play these U.S. tapes.

While videotape formats like, VHS, Betacam, and DV are the same all over the world, television standards are not. The U.S., Mexico, Japan and many other countries use the NTSC standard. Approximately 50 countries use the PAL standard, and others use a standard called SECAM. Predictably, none of these standards are compatible or interchangeable. This clearly creates challenges when recording or exchanging video programs in the international arena. For example, a videotape recorded in New York City will need conversion before being seen in London, and a program broadcast in South Africa will need to be converted before viewing in Columbia.

As a reminder, it is important to check in advance for the broadcast standard of the country you may be visiting. For additional information or to see a demonstration, please contact me at x5433 or on GroupWise.

Media Offers CD and DVD "Burning" Services

By Prof. Kenneth Schlesinger

In our ongoing efforts to support instructional technology at the College, Media Services is pleased to offer new duplication services to accommodate compact disks and DVDs. If you have a classroom project or academic assignment that you would like to distribute or upgrade in format - from VHS to DVD, for example - please come to the Media Desk in E-101 to fill out a Duplication/Transfer request form and discuss the project with us.

Due to our commitment to copyright compliance, please understand that we will not be able to accept copyrighted works for duplication. However, in most cases, faculty and student scholastic projects will be acceptable. Corresponding to your current duplication procedures for VHS and audiocassettes, we request that you provide a blank CD or digital stock for the process.

We hope that these new "burning"services will enhance teaching with technology as we transition from an analog to digital environment. If you have additional questions, please consult Terry Parker (x5433) during the day or Juan Hurtado (x5439) for Extended Day service.

Bibliographic Instruction

By Prof. Louise Fluk

Schedule Library Instruction For Your Class
Are your students intimidated by the library?
struggling with keyword searching in CUNY+?
lost in the stacks? bewildered by EBSCOHost and other periodical databases?
wandering on the Internet?
entangled in the Web?

A class session (or two) in the Library may help demystify library research, reassure your students of the availability of help from librarians, and open their eyes to the information riches available through both the free web and the invisible (library-mediated) web. Each class is tailored to the needs of the particular course and assignment.

To arrange a class in the library, contact Professor Louise Fluk, Coordinator of Instruction, by phone (718-482-5476) or email (fluk@lagcc.cuny.edu), or fill out the interactive online Library Instruction Request Form available at: http://laguardia.edu/library/forms/lmrc.htm
