Children's Databases Available Through EBSCOHost

by Prof. Jane Devine

Those of the LaGuardia community with families or who work with young students will be interested in several databases that target elementary through high school students. These databases are available through the EBSCOHost link on the Library home page and can be used from home.

On the first EBSCOHost menu screen is a link to Searchasaurus, a collection of three databases suitable for elementary school students. The collection
includes a general encyclopedia, the Funk and Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, an Encyclopedia of Animals and Primary Search, which offers full text for many children's magazines and pamphlets. In addition to being available under the Searchasaurus heading, these databases are listed individually on the EBSCOHost database selection screen. All three are presented with colors and graphics that will appeal to young users.

TOPICSearch, also found on the first menu screen, is intended
for junior and high school users. It arranges subject material by topic headings, but also offers keyword searching. It supports students' research with a dictionary, help with citing resources, and articles from over 1000 magazines and 150 newspapers.

These EBSCOHost databases are supported by the New York State Library EmpireLink project. This project provides electronic resources for all state residents by making them available for use by public libraries and public institutions such as CUNY.

This database could be especially applicable for Nursing and Occupational Therapy.
Business Wire News provides full-text business newswires from all over the world, including A&G Information, PR Newswire and Business News Wire.

Advice for the Patient is the USP DI Volume II online, and provides patient-oriented drug information in lay language. Brand names of drugs commonly prescribed in Canada and the United States are covered, including information about uses, precautions
and side effects. The databases are available on the EBSCHost menu screen. We encourage you to look at and use these databases. If you have any comments or questions that you would like to share about using these databases, or to discuss any problems you encounter please e-mail us at swhite@lagcc.cuny.edu or jdevine@lagcc.cuny.edu.

New Databases in EBSCOHost provide improved availability of electronic resources for several subjects, including Health, Science and Business disciplines.

Images and Photos in EBSCOHost

by Prof. Jane Devine

Many of the EBSCOHost databases offer access to an Image Collection to supplement graphics found in articles. Clicking on the Image Collection icon brings up a search screen, and users can search the whole collection or select more specific areas for photos of people, places, historical or natural science
images. Maps and flags are also offered as separate category searches.

Since the Image Collection is compiled individually for each database, images will vary from one database to another. The more specialized databases carry images intended to compliment the subject area.
Images and photographs found in the Image Collection may be under copyright protection. While these images can be copied for personal use, any other use may be a copyright violation. Copyright holder information is supplied for each image, so faculty wishing to pursue legal use of an image may do so.
