Classroom Presentations

The mission of the Library's Media Services is to encourage and support the integration of multimedia into the College's instruction. In cooperation with LaGuardia's Center for Excellence in Teaching with Technology, we offer and promote training for faculty and staff in the operation of equipment and utilization of software to address a cutting-edge curriculum for the 21st century.

Booking equipment and software from Media Services is easy... Most of you are aware of our videotape collection of over 1300 programs developed for instructional needs and cultural enrichment. In addition to making VCRs and TV monitors available for classroom showings of VHS programs, we have recently embarked on the digital age by adding a selection of DVD programs and playback equipment. Further, camcorders, accompanied by a technician, may be borrowed to complete classroom exercises, including simulated

interviews, debates or panel discussions. More sophisticated presentations may require the booking of our TV Studio for workshops or scripted assignments.

While demand for our transparencies and overhead projectors remains heavy, a growing number of faculty are opting for advanced multimedia presentation systems. Media's laptop computer and overhead projectors are available for PowerPoint presentations, and a new state-of-the-art multimedia projector vastly improves image quality and professionalism. This projector can be configured with either a laptop or an IBM-PC with an Internet connection for demonstrations.

Booking equipment and software from Media Services is easy. We request 48 hours advance notice. Please either come to the Media Desk (E101) to fill out an Equipment and Software Reservations form or go online at:

And we won't leave you high and dry! Our technicians are available for set up, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and training in equipment operation, with consultations by appointment. We take our teaching component very seriously, and look forward to the opportunity to partner with you in order to enhance the results of your future classroom presentations.

Institutional Archives

by Marie Spina

What's up in archives? Actually Institutional Archives are up in size and use. We are responding to a growing number of information requests from students and faculty regarding the College's general history and demographics. Several students have requested similar information about other community colleges after they view the material we have collected about LaGuardia.

From the Reference Desk, in our Library Instruction classes, and in the Institutional Archives, we frequently direct students to use our sister archival collections, including the LaGuardia and Wagner collectionson campus or on the Internet, and CUNY-wide resources about demographics and local, city, and state history. Resources available through the Library homepage, such as JSTOR, Social Science Abstracts, and Sociology Abstracts offer information that can enrich and inform students as they pursue their research.
The interest in school demography may come from
