information from among myriad options offered by the Internet and the World Wide Web.

The good news is that these obstacles are not insurmountable. Far from attempting to tame or organize the Web since no one can, as yet, your librarians are hard at work reviewing, analyzing, selecting and subscribing to those web-based resources which provide perfect or very close compatibility to the academic program and research needs of their constituencies. Consequently, one can avoid the danger of getting drowned in the uncharted world of the information superhighway by staying close to home with the carefully selected subscription web-based databases.

A browse search will produce a listing that begins with the entry most closely matching the search term, and then gives other entries in order of their proximity to the search request. This kind of searching can help users explore the catalog even when they are uncertain about the names, titles and subject headings to use. Additional options include searching contents notes, which can help identify chapters within books relevant to research topics.

Once the researcher has found materials in the catalog they can begin to explore its connectivity. The detailed listing of a title includes several points that can bring up additional information. These, in effect, hypertext links, can bring up other titles by the same author, or additional book references on the same or closely related subjects. These points of connectivity are highlighted by color and underlining on the screen for easy use.

Web links are also possible in this new format and if a web version of a particular item exists, such as an electronic journal, its URL with a link will also be given in the detailed view of the item. A researcher can easily take advantage of the link to connect directly with the web site, find the information needed and then return to the catalog for additional searching. Items will be appearing in the catalog that only exist as a web site and the CUNY+Web user will not only be able to learn about such sites through the catalog, but connect directly to them.

CUNY+Web is available for use now and can be accessed through the LaGuardia Library Home Page at http://www.lagcc.cuny.edu/library. Select "Library Units and Services" from the menu and CUNY+Web will be found through "CUNY+PLUS, the Library Catalog.
