INTRODUCTION

Perspective is a newsletter that was published by LaGuardia Community College to keep faculty, staff, students and the surrounding community informed about important news and events. First published in the early 1970s, Perspective provides a vivid picture of life at the college during a span of almost twenty years. Between its pages you will find articles highlighting the accomplishments of both faculty and students. You can trace the career's of many of the college's distinguished faculty and staff, as they progressed through the tenure system, developed new programs, published articles and won grants. You can also read about the many awards and honors achieved by our students.

Perspective chronicles a variety of interesting events. The New York City fiscal crisis of the mid-1970s is covered in detail. The fiscal crisis is a particularly important event because it resulted in the end of free tuition at the City University of New York. Also covered is LaGuardia's expansion from a small community college of 540 students in 1971, to a large urban institution of higher education by the late 1970s. Read about the development of new and innovative courses and degree programs and the construction and renovation of LaGuardia's physical plant. On the lighter side, Perspective covers the celebrations, commencement ceremonies, and special events that occurred at the college during a twenty-year period. Read about the noted personalities who visited our campus. Some of the more prominent include civil rights activist Julian Bond, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, New York State Governor Mario Cuomo, Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, and presidential candidate Walter Mondale.

In addition to Perspective there are other college publications that you may find interesting and useful to your research. They include Fiorello's Flute, The Bridge, Cooperative Education Times and LaGuardia Reports. We also have a number of newsletters/newspapers published by the City University of New York and the Professional Staff Congress. They include CUNY Courier and CUNY Voice, CUNY News and Review and the PSC CUNY Clarion. In addition to these publications, we have on file many press clippings about LaGuardia Community College from daily and weekly newspapers.
