Introduction
Dr. Roy McLeod came to LaGuardia Community College in 1971 to teach mathematics in what was then called the Department of Natural Environment. He previously taught mathematics at Nassau County Community College as an instructor. Dr. McLeod's educational credentials included a Bachelor of Science degree from Blackburn College, a Master of Science from New Mexico Highlands University and an Ed.D from Columbia University. When Dr. McLeod was offered a teaching position at LaGuardia he was faced with a choice. At the same time he was also being courted by Hunter College, a more established component of the City University of New York. Dr. McLeod chose LaGuardia because of the pioneer atmosphere of this upstart community college and never looked back.
During his early years at LaGuardia, Dr. McLeod helped to create a variety of new mathematics courses. His hard work and dedication earned him a well deserved reputation as an excellent teacher and concerned faculty member. By the late 1970s mathematics became a separate department and Dr. McLeod was elected its chairperson, a position he would hold for fifteen years.
During his tenure as chairperson of the Mathematics Department, Dr. McLeod was instrumental in establishing remedial mathematics courses. These courses were designed specifically to help students who were not sufficiently prepared to handle the core mathematics requirements. He also set up the mathematics lab which allowed students to improve their mathematical skills through the use of tutorial software programs. Over the span of his long career, Dr. McLeod wrote a number of books about mathematics. They include Topics in Pre-Calculus, and Precalculus: Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry.
In late 1997, Dr. McLeod retired from LaGuardia Community College after 25 years of distinguished service.
