International Studies Option
The International Studies (IS) Option in Liberal Arts, leading to
the Associate in Arts degree, exposes students to opportunities that
will enable them to live productively in the global village and
function effectively in the global economy. Students will build a
global knowledge base and develop a perspective regarding issues of
international importance.
The curriculum for the International Studies Option can be viewed
by clicking here. The following are some of the special features of
the Option. Students are required to take two cycles of a foreign
language. Every academic year an International Studies pair or cluster
is designed for the students in the Option. In Fall 2001 an
International Studies Cluster, "Culture, Society, and Work: A Global
Perspective," comprising Cultural Anthropology, Introduction to
Sociology, English Composition I, The Research Paper, and Gateway to
the Workplace is being offered. The required Liberal Arts Seminar (LIB
200) for this Option has been developed as a capstone seminar focusing
on "Understanding Globalization."
A unique hybrid of intensive academic and career advisement is the
hallmark of this Option. Students in the Option not only receive
academic advisement and instruction in some core courses from the
director of the Option, they are also provided advisement in being
placed in internationally-oriented internships in New York and in
international internships. Students are also provided with extensive
guidance and support in transferring to senior colleges and in
applying for scholarships.
