BA DEGREE OR PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE
LaGuardia Community College offers the
opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Cultural Studies: ASL-English Interpretation in collaboration with Empire
State College of the State University of New York (SUNY-ESC)
Paths to the BA degree include:
- High School graduates who have studied ASL as their
"foreign" language and want to become interpreters can
lay on foundation in ASL, Deaf Culture and basic liberal arts by
applying to the
AA
Deaf Studies Degree program* at LaGuardia
Community College. They will then become candidates for
the interpreting major at LaGuardia Community College and the
remainder of the BA degree courses at Empire State College (ESC) or
- Applicants who are fluent in ASL, whether from prior college
classes or other life experience, and have an AA degree or a
minimum of 2 years of college, may take the interpreting major
at LaGuardia Community College and the remainder of the BA
degree at Empire State College or
Applicants who are fluent in ASL and have a BA degree or above
may choose to take the LaGuardia Community College program for a
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE
only.

Regardless of the preparation option, admission to the Interpretation
Major will involve screening for the skills, knowledge and aptitude
that will foster success in the program.
