If appointed from a civil service list, health coverage begins on the date of appointment. If hired on a temporary or provisional line, health coverage begins 90-days from the day of appointment (this is not automatic, so when eligible the employee should contact the HR department to schedule a benefits orientation).

DC 37 Welfare Fund Benefits
For civil service titles only, the DC 37 Welfare Fund provides the prescription drug plan, dental plan, vision care and podiatry at no additional cost. 

Retirement Benefits
Are offered through the New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS), which is a Defined Benefit Plan, because the law defines NYCERS benefits, the amount available to you at retirement is governed by formulas stated in the law, not by the condition of the stock market on the day you retire. Interest - The amount that is in your NYCERS retirement account continues to accrue interest, regardless of whether contributions are being made. Vested Benefit - Vesting is the right to receive future retirement benefits upon completing the service requirements of the plan and tier. This means that your future retirement benefits are secure. NYCERS strongly urges you to ask representatives about your vesting and refund rights before leaving City service and to get instructions on how to properly file for this benefit. Retiree Health Insurance Benefits - When you start receiving a pension from NYCERS, you are also eligible for City-paid health insurance benefits. Health benefits are NOT offered or administered by NYCERS, contact the Human Resource Department for more information.

Retirement eligibility is based on years of service and age, which is determined by date of initial full time appointment.

AMC are mandatory contributions that are made by members in the Tier IV Special Programs (i.e. 57/5, etc). In addition to the basic contribution of 3% of wages there is a 1.85% AMC, equaling a 4.85 % bi-weekly deduction of wages. 

Tax-Deferred Annuity (TDA)
A Tax-Deferred Annuity may be purchased from CitiStreet. This is similar to IRA’s: you voluntarily set aside a percentage of your pay before it is taxed, and collect interest, which is also tax-deferred. Disability Benefits 
NYCERS offers two kinds of disability protection to its members -- ordinary and accidental. Ordinary disability is the result of an injury or illness, not necessarily work related, which prevents a participant from performing routine duties of his or her job. NYCERS plans generally require a minimum period of credited service before a participant is eligible for ordinary disability benefits. As a member you are eligible to receive a Disability Retirement Benefit at any age, if you have 10 or more years of Credited Service and are approved by the NYCER’s medical board, or you have less then 10 years of service and your disability is the result of an job related accidental injury. DC 37 also offers disability programs, so for more information contact your union.
