"Internship Experiences"
Back to student page
LaGuardia Community College's Human Service program was a tremendous experience for me, during which I experienced a great deal of personal growth while obtaining a strong academic foundation as I pursue a career in social work. I graduated in fall 2002 and now attend Hunter College as a Sociology major. I found the Human Services program provided substantial preparation and support for my transfer to senior college, but also as a professional in terms of the experience I acquired in my internship.
I gained real world experience tutoring students with special needs which helped to solidify my career goals as a social worker.
I had not attended college previously and as an adult, the idea of school was quite intimidating. I knew I wanted to work with people who are in need, but was unsure of how to accomplish my goals. At LaGuardia I found a very supportive and diverse environment where I could begin my academic career. My professors were very knowledgeable professionals who always had time to answer my questions about school and career choices. However, I was most inspired by my classmates in the Human Services program, many of whom were also adults working full time and raising families in addition to attending school. I met motivated and committed students from all over the world who have become good friends. Attending LaGuardia has helped me to realize my potential as well as giving me the tools to achieve it.
