INTERNSHIPS: a chance to try out a role.
After required foundation courses students begin their internships. Internships
give students a chance to try out roles that they are interested in. Human
Services interns get to work with staff members who have different kinds of
training. Through on-going supervision student interns are not just observers,
they deliver services and provide real assistance to people who need it.
In the Classroom:
While on internship, students take other specialized courses where ideas are
taught through discussions about the students’ practical experiences
in the internship. Students can bring a challenging internship situation to
the classroom for everyone to discuss, helping each other to learn and find
answers to problems.
An Education in Cultural Awareness:
LaGuardia, with students from more than a hundred countries, is a continual
lesson in studying and working with people from other cultures. Human Services
students, as they go to class and their internships throughout New York City,
take part in a living laboratory of exposure to different kinds of ideas, values,
and behaviors. Human services classes provide instruction in working constructively
in a multicultural world.
Planning for the Future:
Students learn how to advance in their human services careers through weekly
seminar classes while they are on internships. Seminars help student to develop
their strengths and weaknesses, design plans for continuing education and learn
about career options.
