Counseling and Mentoring Groups

The GEAR UP site counselors and social workers provide counseling services to students in the three high schools.  Site counselors and social workers work with students individually, in small group sessions, and through classroom presentations.

GEAR UP's Mentoring program targeted students whose core subject grades are marginal (65-75) and who were beginning to cut classes.  Ten (10) Teacher Mentors were hired to work with a total of 120 students over the course of the academic year.  Teacher Mentors provide intensive group support and individual guidance in order to stabilize and improve student attendance and academic performance.  The program also attempted to increase students' sense of belonging to school and to help them clarify their goals.  The Teacher Mentors worked collaboratively with an Assistant Principal and the Gear UP Social Worker assigned to the school.
