LAGCC in the News:

LaGuardia Honors Mayor Koch,
Celebrates Innovative Leadership

Hr Inline

Dear Friends of LaGuardia,

Innovative, bold, optimistic and courageous –the qualities that make New York City Mayor Ed Koch an urban icon are also the qualities that distinguish LaGuardia Community College as a national leader among two-year institutions. Small wonder, then, that the LaGuardia Community College Foundation chose to honor one of the City’s most beloved mayors with its annual Innovative Leadership Award earlier this month.

As always, Hizzoner was a crowd pleaser and the award reception raised significant funds for student scholarships. We also honored one of the Foundation’s greatest supporters, White Castle executive and honorary board director John Vogt. I hope you have a moment to view photos from the event, which was held at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, on our Flickr page.

We were also honored when our current Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, joined Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein here at the College to celebrate the graduates of the Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses program. The initiative’s success in providing entrepreneurs with revenue-generating (and job-creating) business skills and mentoring was featured on NY1.

Attracting Daily News coverage are LaGuardia students in our tourism program who are teaming up with local hotels and economic development groups to promote Queens tourism. This too often forgotten borough will reap more tourism dollars, while our students gain real life work experience.

NY1 covered our lecture by scholar and activist Temple Grandin, who shared with the College community how her simple and sophisticated technological improvements in slaughterhouses have led to industry-wide changes in the way cattle are treated in their final hours.

My best to you for a healthy summer, and thanks for your continued support of LaGuardia.
