LaGCC in the News: Compelling Stories

Hello Everyone,

In case you missed them, there were two compelling stories in The New York Times over the past few days that speak to the incredible work going on at LaGuardia.

The Latino Lag
On Sunday, an article entitled “The Latino Lag” by Joseph Berger, examines the obstacles Latinos face in going to and completing college. The story profiles several of our students and the enormous challenges they face in paying for college, learning the English language and gaining the academic skills they need to succeed.

I particularly love the quote by one of our students, Hilda Segovia, a 25-year–old Ecuadorean immigrant who says, “He [my teacher] told me I could make something more of myself besides just learning English, have a degree in something.” Challenging our students to dare to do more is quite routine here at LaGuardia and it’s exciting to see it addressed in the Times.

A 19th-Century Piano Is So Square, It’s Cool
Monday’s paper featured an article, “A 19th-Century Piano Is So Square, It’s Cool,” in which James Barron shines a light on the brilliant work of our faculty. Dr. Richard Lieberman, Director of the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives and Professor of History, helped foster a spectacular collaboration with the Business and Technology Department that led our business students to undertake research using the Steinway archives housed at LaGuardia.

Students examined and prepared financial statements based on turn-of-the-century data and brought a critical eye to Steinway’s organizational structure. This project is an absolutely breathtaking example of LaGuardia’s innovative pedagogy.

I’m sure you’ll agree that this is “pretty cool.” The creativity and talent that we have at LaGuardia never ceases to astonish me.

My best,

Gail
