Community College de Santiago Opened March 15, 2010
Community College de Santiago’s first cohort of 170 students began classes on March 15, 2010. In 2008, LaGuardia Community College signed an agreement with Universidad Central de Santiago to create the pilot community college in Chile –the first community college in Latin America- under the auspices of the Universidad Central with guidance from LaGuardia. The new institution will enhance social mobility in Chile, providing educational opportunity to an underserved sector of the population.
“This amazing collaboration serves to spotlight the vital role community colleges play in educating the 21st century global workforce,” says Dr. Mellow.
On April 29, 2010 LaGuardia president Dr. Gail O. Mellow and Universidad Central rector Luis Lucero Alday joined over 200 well-wishers at the inaugural celebration for the new college on the campus of Universidad Central in Santiago. Invited guests included government officials, business leaders and the board of trustees of Universidad Central.
