About Us: Student Awards
The English Department at LaGuardia recognizes outstanding students by conferring a series of awards at the end of the Spring I semester. For a list of award recipients, see Student Award Recipients. Award categories and criteria are as follows:
- The Alvina Sellers Memorial Award-presented for best essay on a topic related to social or environmental justice
- Eleanor Q. Tignor Award-presented to a student who has excelled in scholarship in an African American Literature course
- The Peter Rondinone Award-presented for excellence in a Journalism course
- The Doris Fassler Award-presented to a student who has made outstanding progress moving from Basic Writing through the Electives
- The George Groman Award-presented to a student who has exhibited outstanding analytical and critical skills in an Honors class
- The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Critical Writing-presented to a student who has exhibited outstanding analytical and critical writing skills in English 102
- The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Expository Writing-presented to a student of Eng 101 who has achieved excellence in an English 101 course
- The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Creative Writing -presented to a student who has excelled in a creative writing class
- The Black Literature Series Award-presented for outstanding research in the Scavenger Hunt competition
- The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Literature-presented to a student who has excelled in a Children's literature course
