Introspection and Reflection Questions

On page 436-437, Obama describes the baobab trees that he and Auma see in Kenya.  The baobab trees are also pictured on the front cover and on the title page of the book.  Why do you think these drawings were chosen to illustrate Dreams from My Father?  Why do you think the baobab trees are so significant for Obama? What do you think the baobab trees symbolize? Write doewn your reflections on these questions.

Next, consider your own experiences with nature and choose an object from the natural world that symbolizes a significant experience in your life.  First describe the object in great detail. Then write down what the object symbolizes to you and why you believe this symbol is significant to an understanding of your life.

Suggestions for Essays, Presentations, or Research Projects

Contemplating the combination of languages that her daughter speaks, Rukia reflects: “In the end, I’m less interested in a daughter who’s African than one who is authentically herself” (p. 435).  What does Rukia mean by “authentic” and why does Obama choose to tell this story in the Epilogue?

Is it possible to be “authentically” part of a culture in the twenty-first century?  For instance, is it possible to be authentically American in the twenty-first century?  What would be the characteristics of an “authentic” American?  Write down your thoughts on this subject and share them with your peers by reading aloud to each other, constructing a collaborative collage, or creating a Facebook page on this subject.
