On page 454-455 Obama refers to “global competition” and “increased cooperation with other nations.” Define the term “globalization” in your own words and research specific examples of globalization that are relevant to everyday life in the twenty-first century. Consider your research in light of your reading of Dreams from My Father and the first chapter of The Audacity of Hope.
- Throughout the first chapter of The Audacity of Hope Obama analyzes the place of government and politics in American life. Reread this chapter and choose a topic that you find particularly absorbing. Then analyze at least three different viewpoints or policy statements on this topic, using the New York Times as your main reference. Draw on your analysis to formulate your own opinion on this topic and write a letter to the editor of the New York Times that explains your position. You will need to present persuasive reasons for your position, evidence that argues in favor of your position, and a counterargument that considers—and then dismisses— an opposing point of view.
Use your research to write a review of Dreams from My Father and the first chapter of The Audacity of Hope. As you write, be sure to address the following questions: Would you recommend these texts to an audience that is interested in learning more about globalization? Why or why not? Use specific examples from the texts and from your research on globalization to persuade your readers of your position.
