The Internship/Practicum Program:

The Internship/Practicum Program at LaGuardia is a one year, closely supervised, comprehensive counseling experience. The Internship will be individually designed to address the Intern's needs and interests. Interns will have the opportunity to be involved in a full range of counseling experiences including:

Intake and Assessment
Individual Personal Counseling
Developing and Conducting Workshops and Groups
Teaching New Student Seminar
Providing Academic Advisement
Career Counseling
Engaging in Individual Projects

Program Goals:

The goal of the LaGuardia Internship program is to provide its participants with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in their graduate programs, with application in a real-life counseling setting. The focus is on helping the intern establish effective counseling relationships and to refine those skills necessary to facilitate client growth and development. Through close supervision, the interns will explore their personal and professional attitudes, beliefs and values emerging with a clearer sense of their counseling style, and achieving improved effectivness.

The Requirements:

The LaGuardia Internship takes place from September through mid-June. The Intern will follow the college's academic calendar, ensuring a full experience for the practioner, as well as providing continuity for the student. Interns will be expected to devote a minimum of 12 hours per week to college-based activity. Interns will be required to actively engage in weekly supervision, provided by Masters or Doctoral level counseling professionals. Interns will be asked to keep a record of their counseling and related activites. In addition, they will be asked to tape record specific counseling sessions.

Next Step:

Prospective interns should make their initial contact with the College during the Spring, immediately preceding the Fall semester in which they would like to begin. The deadline for applying is May 15th. Final decisions will be made by June 15th.
