Ana Mora, MA, M.Ed, LMHC My work experience at LaGuardia Community College has been very fulfilling. I started working at the College in 1986 where I completed a full-time counseling internship. During my internship I learned the value of applying counseling theory with my work experiences. I taught new Student Seminars and counseled students on academic, career and personal issues. My internship and adjunct work provided me with additional counseling experience and I secured a coveted full-time counseling position in the College discovery program in 1988. Reflecting back on my own experiences I was not that different from many
LaGuardia students. I am a first generation Cuban-American from a low-income
family. My first language was Spanish. As a matter of fact, I entered
1st grade not knowing the English alphabet. My parents did instill the
values of working hard and giving it your all. As a result, I was able
to graduate grade school and high school without much difficulty. Like many LaGuardia students I experienced financial and personal challenges during college. I worked 3 part-time jobs while studying full time (I don't recommend this). I often experienced test anxiety and was afraid of public speaking. I sought the assistance of counselors on campus who were very knowledgeable and helpful. I graduated with honors and am still a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Undecided about my next educational goal, I received career counseling, interviewed those College professors who profoundly influenced me and chose to pursue a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. My grades and background enabled me to receive a Minority scholarship . At Columbia I focused on Career and personal Counseling in a College Setting. My experience with school helped me to become the person I am today. I value my work with my students and take a holistic approach to counseling. My interest in helping students with several facets of their lives led me to further my knowledge in additional counseling areas such as crisis and family counseling, Effective modalities for treating anxiety and depression as well as substance abuse and domestic violence training. I continue to serve as an advocate for students in various College-wide committees.
