Seminars

For each internship you take, you will be required to register for a concurrent seminar course. A Co-op faculty advisor will help you with seminar selection.
The three most frequently offered seminars are described below. Two of the three are offered in an online or hybrid online format. You will find more information about the online format below.
Purpose of the Seminars

  • Broaden your understanding of theoretical concepts as they apply to real-life situations
  • Understand the steps required in the career decision-making process and how to plan for professional mobility and lifelong learning
  • Develop the personal and professional skills and strategies that will facilitate success in the next stages of life

Typical Schedule Overview

Seminars meet for six sessions during your internship. Typically, you can choose from seminar sections scheduled Monday through Thursday from 5:45 p.m. to 7:55 p.m.; Saturday mornings from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 11:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and some weekday afternoons typically 3:25 p.m. to 5:35 p.m.
Online Schedule and Format

Course Descriptions:

CPA041: Critical Reflection and Learning at Work: This seminar will identify experiential learning strategies and techniques that will help students maximize the learning potential of their internships. Topics include principles and practices of experiential education; and exploration of workplace values, culture, ethics; organizational structure; interpersonal and communication skills; and personal/professional development.

CPB041: Fundamentals of Career Advancement: This seminar is designed to enhance your career decision-making skills. You will be engaged in the process of solving your current career/educational dilemma. Other topics include planning for further education, career networking, using career information, and learning from work experience.

CPC041: The Future of Work: This seminar explores changes in the workplace due to advancing technologies and globalization. It will discuss the emerging New Economy and how it is altering key aspects of our working lives as well as our lives outside of paid work. The seminar will also investigate the technological and organizational changes in the workplace during the past few decades. Students will be asked to analyze their current internship in the light of the changing American and global economy.


Major Specific Seminars

CPA040: Animal Research: This seminar is designed to increase awareness of the workplace in the research animal field. Topics include principles of research, governmental ordinances, professional behavior and development, ethics and humane animal care. Emphasis will be placed on the career choice and development as a laboratory animal technician. This seminar accompanies a part-time internship in animal research.

CPB040: Veterinary Practice: This seminar is designed to increase awareness of veterinary medicine as a business. Topics include veterinary medicine as a business. Topics include veterinary practice management, legal implications, ethics and professional development and behavior. Emphasis will be placed on the career choice and the role of the licensed veterinary technician. This seminar accompanies a full-time internship in small animal practice.
