A scholarship is a type of financial aid that does not have
to be paid back. There are two major types of scholarships:
merit-based and need-based.
MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS are given to students
who have good grades, extracurricular activities or volunteer
experience. Usually you need to fill-out a special application
for this type of scholarship. Also, you may need to write
an essay and/or have an interview. International students can
also apply for merit-based scholarships.
NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS are given to
students who have financial need. Often there is an application
for this type of scholarship as well. Need-based scholarships
are only for U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens.
Scholarships are often given by schools, governmental
agencies and private organizations. Students are encouraged
to apply for scholarships early. To look for scholarship opportunities,
