ESL PROGRAMS

Within the framework of learning communities, clusters and paired courses which are so widely and enthusiastically promoted at LaGuardia Community College, and in response to the urgent need expressed by many high schools in Queens for additional instructional support targeting tenth and eleventh grade ESL students at risk of failing the state-mandated Regents exams, College Now has been developing collaborative programs with various neighborhood high schools. These programs allow qualified students to enroll in courses that offer high school credit and provide academic enrichment and language development. Students who enroll have access to all of our on-campus facilities as well as the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities designed to enhance their understanding of academic concepts and content material.

We are offering the following courses in the Fall of 2008:

The Bridge Connection Program

The Bridge Connection Program is a collaboration between LaGuardia Community College and Newcomers High School. Curriculum is developed jointly around a theme, and the goal is the development of language through the enhancement of content knowledge, academic reading, writing and critical thinking skills. All courses are designed to encourage students to think of themselves as learners and to develop the inquiry skills of historians.Throughout the semester, students have the opportunity to participate in course-related trips and/or performances. Students are given college ID cards and encouraged to participate in activities sponsored by LaGuardia. The Bridge Connection, which bears high school credit, serves as a link to the regular College Now credit-bearing courses offered at Newcomers High School. For a more in-depth description of the Bridge Connection Program, see the "Affiliated Program.".
