LaGuardia's College Now program is located in a diverse group of high schools. Eight are large, comprehensive high schools, serving between 2,000-5000 students.
These include Bryant, Flushing , Forest Hills , Grover Cleveland, Franklin K. Lane, Jamaica , Long Island City and Newtown High Schools.
Our program also serves smaller schools whose student enrollment ranges between 500-1500. Schools in this category include Robert F. Wagner Secondary School , Newcomers and Frank Sinatra High Schools , the Academy of American Studies , and the Queens Academy . Three of these smaller schools are themed, using curricula which reflect a particular emphasis—e.g., American History, Fine Arts, or the relationship between Arts and Technology. One serves a specific student population: Newcomers High School is an ESL school designed to help recently arrived immigrant students make the transition to English and American culture. Finally, four of our schools have a close relationship with each other since they either share a building (the case of the Academy of American Studies and Newcomers High School ) or share students and faculty (the case of Frank Sinatra High School and the Robert F. Wagner Secondary School ). Our program strongly encourages the development of a programmatic relationship between these schools through College Now. Though most of our work takes place at the
high schools, our College Now program serves a significant number of students
through the
College Connection program as well, which enables students to take
courses directly at the College. STUDENT ELIGIBILITY Most students who participate in the College Now programs are either juniors or seniors in high school, and LaGuardia collaborates with fifteen high schools in Western Queens. Students can be placed in College Now classes in one of two ways; through Examination Scores or through GPA scores which allow them to take Gateway Courses, the pathway to the more senior level of College Now courses. To be admitted on the basis of examination scores, students need:
