Values
Why is it important to choose a career that is compatible with your values?
Your values are the things that you believe are important in your life and your work. They may include: money, family, religion, ethics and morals, respect, social status, creativity, power, etc. They can be the source of motivation for what you choose and do in different apects of your life and should form the goals you pursue in your life. Achievement of your values can be the source of happiness and satisfaction in your life. Not all the things you value are equal in importance. Those you do pursue actively are probably the stronger ones, but sometimes you can have values that are in conflict, which makes it difficult to pursue both.
Some of the things you value, you want to get from work. These are the ones you need to clarify and rank in importance. If it is important to you to be available to your children, it will be important for you to select a job with flexible hours that doesn't require travel. The first is refered to as core-life value and the second a work-related value. Work-related values are those things about our work responsibilites and environment that are important to us,for example, salary, benfits, work location, creativity, socializing. Core-life values are your personal values, the things you want most in your life, for example, wealth, fun/play, family, travel, health, spirituality, community. Other of your, core life values you are content to satisfy on your own time, like adventure.
One way to become aware of your values is to examine the choices you have made in your life.
