ACADEMIC RESOURCES Learn to navigate college life and make the most of your years here at LaGuardia Community College by becoming the best student you can be. Be greedy with the academic resources offered. When you begin working and/or transfer to a 4-year college/university, you will be equipped with the tools necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Here are five tips for becoming a master student: 1. Study and manage your time well Some Suggested Study Strategies: Use large index cards and place them in different areas of your house or room so that you can see it as many times as possible before an exam. Repetition is the key to retaining information! If you are a visual learner, highlight everything that is significant in your reading, and differentiate topics using a variety of colors. Explain a concept you are trying to grasp to a friend, parent, Academic Advisor, study partner, or child. The more you strive to understand and articulate what you are reading, the more knowledgeable you will become. If you are an auditory learner, discuss the content that was covered in class that day on the telephone with a classmate/friend (whether they are interested or not). If you like mathematics, try to write your notes in mathematical equations! Ex. Brown v. Tutoring: LaGuardia offers a wide variety of academic support. Tutoring is for everyone- whether you earn As, Bs, or Cs in your classes, there is always room for improvement. Too often students begin attending tutoring around midterms or final exams, when it is too late in the semester to master the material. Get to tutoring ASAP to have an expert in your class subject answer all of your questions! Plan ahead Degree Works This is a great tool to empower you to plan your course of study. Degree Works includes the following functions: GPA calculator for you to estimate the letter grade you will receive in each course at the end of the semester so there are fewer surprises. “Look Ahead” button for you to input the courses you would like to take, but not sure which requirement they would fulfill, if any. “Plan Ahead” feature to plan your courses for the next couple semesters until graduation. Transcript section – print your unofficial transcript for a quick glance at your grades for each semester at LaGuardia Community College. Degree Audit – marks the courses you have completed and those that are in progress toward your degree. Print your Degree Audit sheet and bring it your advisement session each semester. Check out this great tutorial CUNY Proficiency Exam Do you know that when you earn 45 credits towards graduation at LaGuardia you will have to take the CUNY Proficient Examination? The following website summarizes everything you need to know about this exam: http://www.lagcc.cuny.edu/cpe/faq.html Financial aid Each spring, you must reapply for financial aid for the following academic year. This is especially critical as an ASAP student because you must qualify for federal or state financial aid to receive the ASAP tuition waiver. You may file the FAFSA (federal) and TAP (NY state) financial aid applications online at LaGuardia’s Student Financial Services website. If you have any questions about your financial aid, please visit the SFS office in C-107. 4. Get to know your professors Getting to know your professors can significantly increase your ability to learn and succeed academically. Asking questions, contributing to class discussions, and attending professors’ office hours will allow you to interact with your professors, demonstrate your initiative, and clarify your understanding of course material. Developing relationships with your professors will be especially beneficial if you need recommendation letters for scholarship and transfer applications, or if you need special accommodations in class. Your course syllabus may list your professor’s contact information, but if not, you may find his or her email address, phone number, and office location in the LaGuardia directory. Contact the relevant academic department for contact information for your professor. 5.
