Student Resources
A variety of resources is available in the M238 Study Laboratory to assist you both to acquire and apply your knowledge of biology. Anatomical models, preserved specimens, videos, computers, books, practice tests and – most importantly – peer tutors can all be found in the laboratory suite. If you think you need an instructional tool that isn’t currently available, we offer guidance regarding alternative study strategies. Come to M238 to join a study group, come with your own study group or come alone. You are always welcome.
Peer tutors:
Who are they?
Peer tutors are students who achieved high grades in SCB203 and SCB204 and who enjoy teaching and discussing topics in human biology. They are always present in the Study Hall whenever it is open.
How can they help me?
Peer tutors offer one-on-one guidance or small group tutorials. They guide your identification of anatomical structures, using models, diagrams and preserved specimens, and they assist you to understand concepts and processes, such as signal conduction by cells of the nervous system.
Do I need to make an appointment?
There is no need to make an appointment to meet with a peer tutor. However, if you enjoy working with a particular tutor, you can arrange to visit M238 when that individual is scheduled to teach. Click on Schedule and Tutors for tutor schedules. Your only responsibility is to sign in and out of M238 when you arrive and when you leave so that we can demonstrate to the state funding agency that the Study Laboratory is being used.
Anatomical Models:
The Study Lab. has many of the anatomical models that are used for the laboratory class exercises in SCB203 and 204. These are also the models that appear on laboratory practical exams for these courses. Peer tutors use our bone models and specimens to construct a practice practical exam so that SCB203 can become familiar with this type of exam before taking the exam for a grade.
Videos:
We have both commercial and “in-house” videos to instruct you in anatomical identifications and physiological processes. The “in-house” videos were filmed by peer tutors who are now, respectively, in the Registered Nursing program at LaGuardia and the Masters in Physical Therapy program at Downstate Medical Center. The in-house videos are designed to provide sufficient training to succeed in laboratory practical exams for SCB203 (anatomical identifications of the components of skeletal and muscle systems) and SCB204 (digestive, urinary and reproductive systems). The video of the human and cat muscle system and have proved a particularly invaluable study tool for what is considered the most difficult of the Human Biology practical exams.
Preserved Specimens:
During laboratory exercises, you have little time to complete dissections and then also to study dissected material. In order to provide you with additional opportunities to study actual tissue, dissected material is available for examination in the fume hood of M237 (the hood draws up vapor from the preservative so that students and tutors will not be irritated by it).
Computers:
Instructional CDs and DVDs are available for use on one of 6 computers. The computers are also available for examination of web-based instructional sites under the guidance of peer tutors, who will suggest to you the best sites given your particular needs.
Practice Exams:
Professors who teach Human Biology I and II have donated examples of lecture and laboratory tests (quizzes and exams). These exams are filed under the name of the professors who wrote them. You can “sign-out” a test to review by requesting it from either the M238 Manager (Bradley Maurer) or a peer tutor. |
