Dear Student of LaGuardia Community College:

The New York City Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (NYC-LSAMP) is an alliance of 16 CUNY Colleges and the Graduate Center. The alliance’s goal is to substantially increase the number of underrepresented minority students who pursue graduate degree in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology. This program is in its eleventh year, and many of the participants have attained a PhD. Alliance participants receive a stipend for their engagement in research projects under the guidance of talented faculty mentors. Students are given the opportunity to present their research project at national conferences.

LaGuardia Community College faculty and students have been participants in this program since its inception. Many student participants have traveled to different regions of the country to present their research project. Most recently, one student participated in a summer internship at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and another at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

The thrust for this academic year is to increase the number of students and faculty mentors for this program. Therefore, I will be contacting chairpersons and faculty members as I embark on this recruitment drive. The College’s activity coordinator is Moody Saint Louis. If you would like more information on this program or can identify students that may benefit from LSAMP, please do not hesitate to contact Moody Saint Louis. He is located in room M-412 and can be reached at (718) 482-5648.

Sincerely,

Marcia T. Caton (The director of LSAMP at LAGCC)
