Linear and Nonlinear Dynamical Systems

Dr. Frank Wang’s main research interest is linear and nonlinear dynamical systems, which are modeled by differential equations.  Many nonlinear equations are impossible to solve analytically, and computer methods are crucial in his research.  Under Dr. Wang’s supervision, his students have learned mathematical and computational techniques which help them strengthen their knowledge acquired in coursework (physics, electric circuits, and differential equations), and generalize to more complex systems.  The study of dynamical systems can also be used to model financial market, biological oscillators, neural networks, and many other phenomena.  Dr. Wang is encouraging students to undertake projects to investigate the recently discovered circuit element memristor (memory resistor), and a general class of dynamical systems called memristive systems.   

LaGuardia / NASA Research Project

Dr James Frost is leading a program which is concerned with exposing students to real scientific research. Areas of research are the Hand-Held Polarimeter Project and the Study of Aerosols in Jupiter’s Stratosphere.  Students are exposed to mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and web page development.   The program is ongoing throughout the year, with sessions during the academic year and a summer session consisting of 8-10 weeks. Students can apply for Coop internship credits, both on a part and full time basis.  Students can work as volunteers or in certain cases can receive research stipends.

The Hand-Held Polarimeter Project is concerned with the development of a scientific instrument, called the polarimeter. This instrument measures the amounts of certain pollutants called, aerosols, in the earth’s atmosphere.  The project involves the design, construction, testing, data collection, and data analysis of the instrument. This project is related to the general problem of global warming in that the aerosol data results obtained will be used to predict future climate warming trends on the planet earth.

The Jupiter project concerns itself with analyzing the properties of aerosols in Jupiter’s stratosphere.  Data sets from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Voyager Mission are examined to determine aerosol properties and dynamics on Jupiter’s North and South Poles.  It is hoped that learning about aerosols on Jupiter will lead to clues about aerosols
on earth.

Students who have participated in these programs have presented their results throughout the United States in international and national scientific conferences and in some cases have had their work published.

The collaborators for this project are the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, which provides science advisors, The NASA New York City Space Science Alliance based at Medgar Evers College CUNY which provides financial and equipment support, and the NSF New York City LSAMPS, which provides support for students.

Floating Remote-Controlled Sensors

Dr. Hendrick Delcham, from the Math and Engineering Department, is currently seeking students to work with an airship (Helium filled) fitted with various sensors such as barometric and temperature. Specifically, students will create the hardware and software interfaces needed to have the airship's sensors download information to a remote PC for processing. Future development can include attempts to create an iRobot type airship that can maneuver without human intervention, or a "simple" floating Wi-Fi controlled monitoring system. The airship's applications are in populated areas where there is little to no wind such as some warehouses, atrium, and hallway areas. The project will be challenging because the airship will be designed for indoor applications so its dimensions will severely limit its payload carrying.

Face Recognition and Social Tolerance

Dr, Joanne Pierre-Louis , from the Social Sciences department, is doing research that focuses on investigating anti-bias interventions and understanding its influence on social tolerance as well as investigating face recognition processes.
