Blue Vinyl (2002): A Conversation with Filmmaker Judith Helfand
- Save the Earth! Film and Discussion Series*
Little Theater, LaGuardia Community College
- Time: 4:35 PM
Meet Peabody Award-winning director Judith Helfand in a free screening and audience conversation that will probably touch upon such subjects as PVC, environmental toxins, the manslaughter trial of 31 former executives from a PVC-producing company, and her own work as a media activist and director of Blue Vinyl (2002), the documentary the Kansas City Star called "Hilarious, outrageous, and energizing! ... a new standard in activist filmmaking."
In Helfand's own words: "when I was twenty-five I was diagnosed with DES-related cervical cancer and my social-change filmmaking took a radical shift - it got personal. Millions of women, including my mom, had been prescribed the anti-miscarriage 'wonder drug' diethylstilbestrol despite the pharmaceutical industry knowing it was ineffective, carcinogenic and harmful to lab rats and their offspring. .... Every film’s core must contain palpable stakes - an authentic relationship worth fighting for and a heart at risk of being broken."
