ESL PLACEMENT PROFILES

ESL PLACEMENTS ARE NOT BASED ON CATW SCORES.

Instead, ESL faculty read and place students' entrance exams without regard for the CATW scores.  In this way, writing levels (i.e., 097, 098, 099) are determined.  These results are given to the Testing Office which determines placement in Track 1 or Track 2 based on reading (CSE) placements as follows:

Track 1 - ESL (Lower Reading Placements)

ESL 097 - New or Continuing Students with a 097 writing level and CSE 095 (Code 970)

ESL 098 - New or Continuing Students with a 098 writing level and CSE 095 (Code 980)

ESL 099 - New or Continuing Students with a 099 writing level and CSE 095 or CSE 099 (Code 990)

Track 2 - ESR (Higher Reading Placements)

ESR 097 - New Students only with a 097 writing level and CSE 099/No Reading required (Code 971)

ESR 098 - New Students with a 098 writing level and CSE 099/No Reading required or Continuing Students from ESR 097 (Code 981)

ESR 099/ESC 099 - New Students with a 099 writing level and No Reading required or Continuing Students from ESR 098 (Code 991)

*********************************************************

Students in Track 1 who do not pass must repeat the same course.  Students in Track 2 who do not pass revert to the same level in Track 1 (i.e., a student failing ESR 097 goes to ESL 097; a student failing ESR 098 goes to ESL 098; a student failing ESR 099 goes to ESL 099).

Placements for all Express and Second Chance courses are determined by ESL faculty.

ESA 099 is the equivalent of ENG 099 and recommended for most students exiting the ESL Program.

ESC 099 is an accelerated course combining both ESR 099 and ESA (ENG) 099.  At the end of the course, ESL faculty place students according to their final exams and results of the CATW.  (The CATW is given in this course.)  Possible placements are ESL 099 if students do not pass the exit exam for the course, ESA (ENG) 099 if they pass the course but not CATW, or ENG 101 if they pass the CATW.

If ESR classes are full, ESR students should be placed at the corresponding ESL level (i.e., if a student places in ESR 098 but all ESR 098 sections are full, the student should be placed in ESL 098).  However, ESL students cannot be placed in ESR even if all ESL classes are full.
