• Academics
  • Advising is dedicated to helping you achieve your educational and career goals. You have an Advising Team, based on your major, which combines the knowledge of professional advisors with the expertise of faculty to help you map out the best route to graduation, a four-year college or a career.

     Expectations for Advising Teams

    Advising teams will:

    • Foster sustained, meaningful interactions between you and your professors, advisors, and peers so that you can develop strong college-based relationships.
    • Help you develop an educational plan that clarifies educational and career aspirations. This includes providing guidance on career pathways, occupational information, transfer, and employment opportunities.
    • Develop your college “know-how”, empowering you to make smart choices, navigate systems, locate accurate information, and access resources.  Your team may also sometimes refer you to the appropriate office for additional help, such as to financial aid, tutoring, transfer services, career planning and employment services, and health services.
    • Seek to promote attitudes, mind-sets, strategies, and behaviors that are conducive to your success.
    • Guide you efficiently through your degree programs. This includes familiarizing you with curricular and program requirements (such as candidacy/program admission) and assisting you with course selection.
    • Provide one-on-one and group advising (as appropriately determined by each team), as well as hold advisement events for you and other students in your major, every semester.
    • Ensure that if you are in the major you can receive course selection advisement during in-demand times, in particular, in the weeks preceding the commencement of registration periods.
    • Participate in advising workshops and/or professional development workshops through the Center for Teaching and Learning.
    • Use advisement tools (e.g., the advising website, Degree Audit, SEMS, ePortfolio and eCareer Plan, Ask LaGuardia,) to guide you and document your contact. You are strongly encouraged to use the appropriate tools as well.
