GENERAL PRE-REQUISITES FOR PARAMEDIC PROGRAM ADMISSION
The general pre-requisites for admission to the Paramedic Program are the same for both AAS Degree applicants and Certificate Program applicants:
EDUCATION• High School Diploma (GED certificate accepted)
EMT CERTIFICATION• Evidence of current NYS EMT – Basic Certification (must remain valid for duration of paramedic training).
• AAS Degree applicants who are not currently EMTs must apply for admission to the EMT-Basic class (Room C-339).
AMBULANCE EXPERIENCE• Minimum 6 months or 200 clinical hours of ambulance experience is required for admission to the Paramedic Program. The definition of “clinical hours” is any time spent doing EMS activities, such as daily ambulance inspections, ambulance responses, and documentation activities while on duty.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Candidates who meet the pre-requisites listed above are eligible to take the entrance exams for the Paramedic Program.
The entrance exams assess three important areas:
• Essential Math and Algebra Skills
• EMT – Basic Knowledge
• Reading Comprehension
Applicants must pass each section with 75% (C) or better to be eligible for the interview with a member of the faculty. There will be two re-tests allowed for any failed categories. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT APPLICANTS PREPARE FOR THE ENTRANCE EXAMS. INQUIRE ABOUT THE SAMPLE EXAMS WHICH ARE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST YOU!
The admission decision is based on the following criteria:
• Entrance exam results
• EMS experience
• Educational background (prior college courses and/or EMS continuing education courses)
• Interview with Program Director or faculty
ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA FOR AAS DEGREE CANDIDATES
Individuals interested in the AAS Degree program must also complete the Standard College Application Process.
All basic skills courses (CSE 099, MAT 096, ENG 099) must be successfully completed before admission to any EMS classes (SCE100 / SCE230).
Generally, AAS Degree students start their EMT - Paramedic education in their second year, following completion of the EMT – Basic and liberal arts courses required for the AAS Degree.
In order to be eligible to take the entrance exams, the AAS Degree applicant must either have active student status or a letter of acceptance from LaGuardia with a transfer credit evaluation.
In order to be considered for the Paramedic Program, AAS Degree students must meet the following requirements:
• Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) at LaGuardia of 2.0.
• Completion of Anatomy and Physiology Courses (SCB 203 and SCB 204) with C grade or higher. (Only 4 credit courses will be accepted)
• Active student status or a letter of acceptance from LaGuardia with a transfer credit evaluation.
• Successful completion of Paramedic Program entrance exams and interview.
• Permission of the Program Director.
*** NOTE: AUGUST 20th is the deadline for AAS Degree students to be selected for the next EMT – Paramedic course. In order to be considered for the next EMT – Paramedic Course, AAS Degree applicants must meet all the requirements listed above and have no “registrar stops” that would prevent registration for college courses. AAS Degree applicants not meeting these criteria or with incomplete applications will be deferred until the following year.
